What is a Dental Implant

Is your smile marred by one or more missing teeth? You probably feel self-conscious about your appearance, and you may also have difficulty eating the foods you used to love or speaking clearly.

You have options for replacing your missing tooth or teeth. The option our patients like the best is the dental implant. While other tooth replacement techniques fill in the gap, they can also cause other problems by requiring alteration to other healthy teeth. Whenever possible, we’d much prefer to fix a tooth without having to compromise the health of your other teeth!

A dental implant allows us to do exactly that – in fact, they actually help to maintain the health of your other teeth. When you lose a tooth, the bone in your jaw begins to deteriorate. In response, your other teeth tilt and become loose. Eventually, as the jawbone continues to weaken, you will likely lose other teeth.

With dental implants, we can prevent this problem. The metal post of the implant acts as a replacement tooth root, restoring the relationship between the root and the bone and stimulating the bone to maintain itself.

The implant is then used to hold in place a porcelain crown that will be designed to blend in beautifully with the rest of your teeth in both size and shape. The result is a complete smile that lasts.
